The (Blank) Rally Ever kicked things off at 7:00pm on Friday, August 31st at the Cedar Cottage Bistro with the meet and greet. The Vancouver Ruckus Community led a ride around the East Side of Vancouver, while the stragglers got together for a ride around Stanley Park followed by late night eats at Hamburger Mary’s.
Saturday morning’s breakfast was hosted by The Fray, who served up three fantastic breakfast specials for hungry scooterists to enjoy. Rules and bingo cards were distributed for the inaugural DONUT bingo game. The card included 25 donut shops (some appeared more than once); first person to complete one line would be the winner. At noon we left for a ride led by Derrick Daniels (WSCE) across the North Shore, including stops in Deep Cove for a visit to Honey’s Doughnuts, and a stop at Harmony Donuts who put on a spread of free donuts and coffee for everyone. We then rode off to New Brighton Park, and broke for some free time.
Everyone met up again in the Olympic Village for a 6:00pm ride, led by Joel McCooey and the Vancouver Ruckus Community, around University of British Columbia and out to Richmond where we were given the VIP treatment by the Richmond Summer Night Market. We rode in through the back gate and rode straight through the open-air market to park by the second stage. The group split up to sample the wares of the 199 retail and 61 food vendors. After hanging out for a few hours in the market, riders began to go their own way, some guests riding home to Bellingham, while others hit the town for a night out.
Sunday kicked off with Joel McCooey stepping up again to cook everyone breakfast at Salsbury Park with the assistance of his fiancée Shirley Bustori and John “Cake” Boyer. After breakfast Christian Jahrsdoerfer and Chris Rousseau, of the Daggers S&MC, led us on a gorgeous ride to Port Moody and around the Belcarra Loop. Then it was off to the River Market at the Wesminster Quay. The River Market hooked us up with a great deal allowing us to sample five dishes from the various vendors. After everyone had sated them selves we gathered for a MODonut eating contest won by Christian Jahrsdoerfer. The donuts were decorated by Pamola Bakery in the RAF roundel and looked fantastic.
From the River Market we rode to Fraser Foreshore Park for the raffle and Gymkhana. Liz Trevisan (Worst Scooter Club Ever member) and Nelly Lizarraga (Metro Betties of Seattle) won the Corazzo prize packs. Andrew Snyder won the slow race beating out Joel McCooey and Yoni Schultz (Portland) in the final round. The home team beat the visitors in an epic tug of war and Derrick Daniels pulled out the sled and towed people across the grass with his P200 until the sled was worn through.
We split off from the park and gathered again a few hours later at the Princeton Pub for Karaoke and rally awards. John Boyer won the DONUT bingo, proving it could be done. We rode forth from the Princeton and Keith Ryder of Castlegar, BC and Sean “Skwirly” Burns (WSCE) kept the tradition of the naked ride to scooter beach alive. After the beach, there were late night eats at Duffin’s Donuts for those still going strong.
Monday morning saw everyone on Commercial Drive saying their goodbyes, followed by a ride for the remaining few to Tanpopo for all you can eat sushi. So ends another rally season in Western Canada, can’t wait to see you all next season and hope you’ll join us for Vancouver’s 27th annual rally next Labor-Day Weekend.
